Grading system- better or worse All of us know the hot news about the grading system that was established from the year 2009 from kindergarten to grade 10. It is also proposed that the 10th board exams will be made optional from the next year. But till last year 10 was a very important year for all of us. Students were under pressure and anyone who came across asked them to study well {I can understand how it might have felt} But know it will all be easy. How many of you think it’s better now. What I feel is life is nothing without problems. The 10th grade was a challenge for all to do well and score good marks but now it’s quite simplified. Other drawback is that it places a student scoring 90.1 % and 94.98% at the same position. Isn’t that quite unfair??? “The teachers as well as the students are not liking it, taking in consideration the competitive spirit“as said by 10 grade teacher. Al though the pressure on the students has gone down the system has experienced many drawbacks. How many of you feel so?????? Follow my blogs for more such interesting topics.

Nice article, but….
I’m 18 years old and I’ve given both my 10th and 12th board exams under CBSE. I studied in DPS, Kuwait.
I just want to let everybody know that:
1. The 10th boards are pointless. Thank God it’s optional now.
2. Nobody official sees your results. It’s only for the moms to gossip in the mornings- “You know, my son got this much”, “My daughter got this much!”. Every school that takes in admissions for class XI looks at the pre board marks as they come out earlier.
3. The 12th boards are pointless too. For exactly the same reasons. You just need to get a 60 up and you’re fine.
4. I got 87% in both X and XII. So don’t assume that I’m in the lower rung in academics. My favourite subjects are Computers and English. In fact, if I was in class X now, I’d opt out of the board exams. Not worth it. You may live up to 70 years of age. You’re wasting ONE whole year preparing for the simplest papers in the world, yet you have the most pressurizing year in your life until then. Really not worth it.

So heres a braino talking about marks not being important!!! What about those for whom these marks are an indication of their ability and aptitudes???
Agreed you WASTE 1 year of your life but doesn’t that shape you for the remaining??
Ever heard of the 72 cuts that create a diamond??!!
@Neera ma’am
With due respect, I don’t think that these marks are an indication of aptitude. These exams are designed such that it is not possible to distinguish between the intelligence of a student scoring 95 and a student scoring a 100. In fact, a student with an 85 might turn out to be more intelligent than those two.
How would something you don’t like to study(History in my case), come useful later in life? All these exams do is give us a practice of rote learning, which is not very useful in real life.
I would rather spend that one year doing something fun or something that interests me than learning something I have absolutely no interest in!
I would first like to congratulate anish on the wonderful article written by him.
Secondly, I would like to address Parav. I partially agree with you but there are also points where I’d beg to differ. I completely agree that exams do not decide the future or aptitude of a student but they definitely pave the way to a person’s success. They may not be the main deciding factor but are surely contributors to the same. And as for studying extra subjects, what knowledge- hungry enthusiast minds a little extra dose of it?
To begin with, I don’t quite understand the idea of relieving the stress of giving examinations for students. Aren’t we just suggesting to them that they can escape wherever they have to slog!!!! Okay fine! We make the road smooth for them while they’re in school…but what about the stress that THEY have to manage in college, competitive exams, interviews, jobs and later in life.
As far as the comprehensive evaluation is concerned…How many schools with an average class strength of 50+ are going to do a fair job of monitoring and assessing them, ACTUALLY throughout the year?!?!
Is it just leading to a glorified paperwork and an increased literacy rate of the country? or is it actually going to do some good to the students by supposedly bringing out the innate talents?!!!
As far as being forced to study the subjects you hate( Parav this is for you
), how do you know that you hate the subject unless you study it?!!!!
The choice of subjects tapers down and becomes more convergent as you proceed higher up, that is by the time you reach the PG level, you can actually select the subject you want to master. For eg. You can not do your M.Tech in heavy motors till you actually your B.E. in electrical eng., your class 12th in PCM and class 10th in just three more than that!!!!!!
Taking examinations, I believe, is like a sniff test which helps you choose the fragrance of your career in life!
Comments, Any!?!?!?
well frankly, find the point of the simplifications-of-examination-checking idea increasingly becoming a sort of escape for students to stop working, put forward by neera ma’am very apt! in fact it is exactly what I wanted to say too!
BUT, I do agree with Varun and Parav’s points, 10th boards ARE pointless! they give you absolutely no clue of what lies ahead! they just give you an illusion that you could be a ‘brainiac’. They’re absolute rubbish! I mean anybody can practice the set things over and over again and easily scrape a 90 and above percentage in the 10th, it’s freaking easy! so yeah, taking the above explanation, as such there’s no difference between a 90% and 94% scorer even in the percentage system currently.
Agreed, examination scores nor your profession can actually decide your true self, but that doesn’t mean ‘simplifying’ the examination routine will do any good! It’s just giving the students a clear idea that you can, nowadays, wear a mask of being burdened and get away with things at your school level easily.
Life is so full of pressures these days that to be sane and successful, you have got to be alert and take some amount of pressures! it’s inevitable now! in my perspective, students not only can manage studies but can plan the college, the financial resources, the best place to live in, the newest options, provided they have the zeal to do it! so much so, that the parents these days only have to know about the plans and just pour in the necessary financial resources and do nothing else! the coming generations, us and the ones coming after us, are way smarter that one can imagine! Internet has lead to such a wave of communication and knowledge that practically anything is possible! students CAN handle any amount of ‘stress’!! and what i’ve said are way bigger pressures that a stupid examination so yeah, they DEFINITELY can take the petite ‘stress’.
so why is there such a ruckus of ‘oh my god! such terrible examinations! my poor poor child!’
YUCK! i’d say, ‘GET A LIFE!’ to all those people who say, believe and propagate that!
In all, this grading system gets a total thumbs down from my side, although the boards optional may well get an approval
I personely feel that the stress quotient set by the board exams, it trains a student to handle pressure and commit to performance under that pressure. This grading system has its merit as well as demerits, for a better implimentation we should come out with a system to judge out the Interest of a student in a particular field by his/her 8th standard & amp; give him/her an option to prepare in next four Year time i.e 9th to 12th, then this grading system has value, by this time a student will get ready to compete class 12th exam & amp; we can identifying the best mind too.this grading system has demerit that we cannot comfortably compare the grades of two students from different schools.
Firstly, congo Anish!! Excellent article! You spurred on a real good debate here!
There are some really interesting points made here but I would like to take this discussion to another direction…
I agree that 10th boards are really pointless, owing to the level of difficulty of the exams but they sure do train students for exams beyond the school level. The primary aim of giving board exams is to compete on a national level and attain a standing in the country. Grades or percentages do matter a lot but real importance has to be given to percentiles!! Ultimate considerations have to be based on percentiles, and percentiles combined with either grades or marks will not make that big a difference then…
I say this because finally after the class 12 board exams, students have to take country wide competitive exams which will decide the further course of their respective lives, no dobut class 10 and 12 will have an impact, but it will not be that substantial, coming back to the point, why can’t students be trained for such exams from the begning itself???
Comment, contradict or critize freely!!!

10th…even i can recollect our boards days….
students should give the boards even though its optional..it will let them know where they stand..and moreover choose their careers too…!!
ur article was good.:)
