The Great Unconsciousness

Posted by: calorx on: February 10, 2010

After Australia gathering colossal recognition for its extensive ‘Curry Bashing’, the latest kid on the block to advance upon similar endeavors seems to be th US. The reason to assume this, is the recent attack on a Sikh youth in Texas, which can be termed nothing less than brutal. This pizza delivery boy was assaulted by a bunch of young Americans who later brought him face to face with death by almost drowning him in a swimming pool, before he managed to escape and cling on to dear life.
This young Sikh is among the thousands of Indians and Asians attacked every month in these countries where they move to, hoping to secure a better future for themselves by gaining the best training possible in their respective fields of interests. But of late, alarming numbers of these students have ended up gathering nothing but bitter and disconcerting experiences, and securing a future full of unrelenting trauma and trepidation for themselves.
The question that needs to be answered after observing this disturbing trend that has enveloped these nations, believed to be the best and most desirable study and training destinations for ambitious Asians, is why exactly are they subjected to such racial harassment? What is it that makes them so vulnerable to attacks by locals?
There could actually be numerous possible answers to this question. One reason might be the inability of a normal local to adjust with or accept immigrants. There exists a very probable consideration that most people of such countries are unable to acknowledge or live with the fact of an unknown immigrant  extracting the best out of their country’s top notch facilities and later seizing the employment opportunities that are supposed to rightfully belong to natives. In many cases, it has also been noticed that the mannerisms and characteristic behavior of immigrants tend to annoy the natives. This may reflect a conspicuous insecurity of the human mind and patent reluctance to fine-tune with change and acknowledge or appreciate contrasting cultures and better abilities or skills.
Some of the defenders of these countries that have been stained and disgraced by being tagged ‘racist’, argue that attacks on Indians or immigrants in general, are not results of racial  discrimination but are as normal as attacks on  natives. They advocate the possible reasons for these attacks are often personal and have nothing to do with any kind of intention or sentiment of racial prejudice.
These possible causes and justifications for the escalating attacks on immigrants are interminable. But what needs attention is the very fact that something as ugly  as this is happening in the contemporary world that is aiming for world peace and breaking down all social, economic and geographical barriers by means of miraculous developments in technology, which again is the result of collective efforts and contributions made by almost all the parts of the world. What needs attention is analyzing why, despite all this progress and growth, our minds remain primitive and despicable. And hence, what definitely needs amendment is our thinking and our conscience, so that we’re able to look into the depths of our own selves and discover better people with broader visions and greater hearts, discover people who lead themselves and the world collectively, to new and towering heights of success and mental peace. Even if this united effort doesn’t make this world a Utopian reality, it will definitely make it a much better place to live peacefully in.. So why not give it a try?
